What Splitbill is

Splitbill is a bill-splitting app for the web and Android. The mobile app is offline-first: your data lives on your device and only syncs to our server when you create an account and sign in.

Data we collect

• Account data: your name, email address, and a hashed password when you sign up — or, if you sign in with Google, your name, email address and profile photo from your Google account.
• Expense data: the groups, expenses, payments, and member names/emails you enter, so balances can be shared with the people in your groups.
• Receipt photos: images you choose to attach to an expense. They're stored on our server and shown only to people who can see that expense.
• Device tokens: if you allow notifications, a push token for your phone or browser, so we can tell you when someone adds an expense or payment involving you.
• Preferences: your default currency and language.

If you use the mobile app without an account, this data stays on your device and is not sent to us at all.

How we use it

Only to run Splitbill: to sign you in, sync your data between your devices, share expenses with the people you split them with, send you the notifications and email codes described here, and keep the service secure.

What we don't do

• No ads and no third-party trackers or analytics.
• We never sell your data or share it for advertising.
• No payment processing — Splitbill only records who owes whom; no money moves through it.

Services we rely on

These providers process data on our behalf, only for the purpose listed:

• Google Sign-In / Firebase Authentication — if you choose “Continue with Google”, to confirm who you are.
• Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) — to deliver push notifications. A notification carries a short message such as who added an expense and its amount.
• An email delivery provider — to send sign-up and password-reset codes. We don't send marketing email.
• Our hosting provider — the server and database that store synced data.
• frankfurter.dev — currency exchange rates. No personal data is sent, only currency codes.

Data sharing within groups

When you add an expense to a shared group or a friend, the people in it can see that expense, your display name, and the balances that follow from it — that's the point of the app.

Security and retention

Data travels over encrypted (HTTPS) connections and passwords are stored only as salted hashes. We keep your data for as long as you have an account.

Deleting your data

You can delete expenses and groups in the app at any time. You can delete your whole account yourself from the Account tab in the app or Settings on the website — here's how, and what gets deleted. Expenses you share with other people stay on their side, shown as “Deleted user”, so their balances still add up.

Children

Splitbill isn't directed at children under 13.

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
